Milwaukee Bucks Weakness Exposed Despite Win Against Indiana

The Milwaukee Bucks may have escaped with a 117-115 victory over the Indiana Pacers, but the game revealed a significant crack in their armor. Despite the win, secured by a clutch shot from Giannis Antetokounmpo, the severely undermanned Pacers managed to expose a glaring weakness in Milwaukee’s interior defense, raising concerns about the team’s championship aspirations.

Milwaukee Bucks Allowing Opponents To Feast in the Paint

The box score tells a clear story: the injury-riddled Pacers scored 58 of their points in the paint against a Bucks frontcourt that features defensive stalwarts Antetokounmpo and Myles Turner. Indiana consistently attacked the rim and found success, particularly during the stretches when Turner was on the bench.

The Bucks’ defensive identity is built around protecting the paint, but that elite defense seems to disappear the moment Turner rests. When backup center Bobby Portis enters the game, opposing teams have been quick to exploit the drop-off. The Pacers relentlessly attacked the basket during these minutes, getting easy layups, dunks, and put-backs. What was once an 11-point Bucks lead quickly dwindled to just two by the time Turner checked back in, highlighting how vulnerable the team is without its primary rim protector.

A Stark Defensive Drop-Off

The numbers behind this trend are alarming. Statistical analysis shows a massive difference in the Bucks’ defensive rating when Turner is on versus off the floor. With him playing, Milwaukee’s defense is among the top ten in the league. When he sits, that rating plummets dramatically. This isn’t a new problem, but the Pacers’ ability to so effectively exploit it serves as a major warning sign.

Portis, despite his energy and effort, does not possess the length or timing to be an effective rim protector. This forces Milwaukee into a difficult position. They can’t afford to play Turner for 40 minutes a night, but every minute he rests becomes an opportunity for opponents to score easily at the basket.

Finding a Solution

This defensive vulnerability presents a critical challenge for head coach Doc Rivers and the Bucks’ front office. As the season progresses, every opponent will look to replicate Indiana’s game plan by targeting the minutes when Turner is off the court. The current roster does not offer an obvious solution. Players like Jericho Sims could provide better rim protection, but their offensive limitations have kept their playing time restricted.

The Bucks got away with it against the Pacers thanks to a heroic shot from their superstar. However, relying on last-second heroics is not a sustainable formula for a team with championship hopes. Milwaukee must find a reliable defensive presence for their second unit, or they risk having this clear weakness exploited when it matters most in the playoffs. The problem has been exposed; now, the clock is ticking to find a fix.
