The Milwaukee Bucks weren’t willing to trade Bobby Portis to acquire Golden State Warriors restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, according to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.

The Bucks re-signed Portis on July 6 to a three-year, $43.6 million deal.

“It is also worth mentioning that the Milwaukee Bucks were another team that kicked around the idea of pursuing Jonathan Kuminga,” Siegel wrote. “If they were to do so, the Warriors made it known they would want Bobby Portis in a sign-and-trade scenario, which is something Milwaukee wasn’t willing to do. The Dubs have held interest in Portis dating back to before the 2024 NBA trade deadline.”

The Bucks lost to the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 2025 playoffs in five games. Indiana also beat Milwaukee in the first round of the 2024 playoffs in six games.

Bucks general manager Jon Horst was very busy this offseason. He waived and stretched Damian Lillard, signed Myles Turner and Gary Harris and re-signed Portis, Kevin Porter Jr., Gary Trent Jr., Taurean Prince and Jericho Sims.

Kuminga wants to leave the Warriors, but there are no teams with cap space to sign him to an offer sheet and Golden State is not interested in what the Sacramento Kings or Phoenix Suns have offered them in sign-and-trade talks.

The Warriors offered Kuminga a two-year, $45 million deal this offseason. Kuminga declined the offer because the second year of the deal is a team option and not a player option.

It looks like Kuminga will play next season with the Warriors on a one-year qualifying offer and then hit unrestricted free agency next offseason. As an unrestricted free agent, Kuminga can leave Golden State and pick his next team.

Kuminga has until October 1 to sign his $7.9 million qualifying offer for next season.

The Warriors, who lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2025 playoffs in five games, are expected to sign Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton once the Kuminga situation gets finalized.
