The Los Angeles Lakers’ blockbuster acquisition of Luka Doncic in February 2025 reshaped the franchise’s trajectory.

However, it ignited debates about roster compatibility, particularly concerning guard Austin Reaves.

Veteran forward Marcus Morris recently voiced concerns about the pairing. He suggests Reaves’ defensive limitations make him an ill fit alongside Luka Doncic in crucial playoff situations.

Morris warns Lakers about their “slow feet” backcourt problem

“I’m a big fan of Austin Reaves… but I don’t like the combination of him and Luka,” Morris stated, referencing his brother Markieff’s Lakers connection.

“When you’re in playoffs, everybody’s looking for matchups, everybody’s looking for slow feet guys, and you can’t have Luka and Austin Reaves on the court at the same time.”

“I just feel like that combination didn’t work when it comes to defensively,” Morris added. His critique focuses on exploitable matchups that opposing teams target during playoff intensity.

Morris proposed Minnesota as a suitable destination for Reaves, suggesting mutual benefits. The Timberwolves’ defensive prowess could mask Reaves’ weaknesses while utilizing his offensive versatility.

Reaves delivered career-best numbers despite defensive criticism

Despite critiques, Reaves demonstrated remarkable growth this season. He averaged career-highs of 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game while establishing himself as a legitimate scoring threat.

His breakout moments included a 45-point explosion against Indiana and a Christmas Day triple-double. Reaves even surpassed Kobe Bryant for second-most three-pointers in Lakers single-season history.

Lakers reportedly refusing to trade Reaves unless they get elite talent

Reaves’ agent has actively fought trade rumors, emphasizing his client’s value and upside. The Lakers reportedly remain unwilling to part with Reaves unless they receive top-tier talent in return.

While Morris raises valid defensive concerns, Reaves’ offensive contributions and growth trajectory make him invaluable. Any trade decision must weigh potential defensive improvements against losing his versatility.

Since the Lakers prefer to build around Doncic and LeBron James, the choices they make on the roster will be key in determining the team’s chances of winning the championship.
