The NBA debuted a new format for the 2025 All-Star Game this past weekend in San Francisco. Unfortunately for league commissioner Adam Silver, it wasn't a huge success.
Instead of having two teams compete on the big stage, the NBA had four squads battle it out in a mini tournament. Shaq’s OGs, which featured Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, ended up winning it all. Throughout the night, fans made it clear they weren't thrilled with the product on display.
Although we're two days removed from the All-Star Game, the NBA hasn't said much about its new format. In fact, Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports pointed out that Sunday's ratings for the NBA All-Star Game have not yet been revealed.
The ratings from this past weekend's "Saturday Night Live," however, were shared by NBC. The 50th anniversary special landed 14.8 million viewers across NBC and Peacock.
"SNL 50 ratings came out over 24 hours ago but no NBA All-Star yet," Glasspiegel wrote. "Things that make you go hmm."
Anthony Irwin of ClutchPoints added, "If they were good they'd have been out already."
Let's just say the NBA's silence is deafening.
Several notable players have offered their thoughts on the new All-Star Game format. The reviews so far have been mixed.
"I think it was a good step in the right direction to reinvigorate the game in some way. We needed some new life, new juice in the game - something kind of unexpected," Steph Curry said. "The way people consume basketball is different. It's not going to look like it used to. But it can still be fun for everybody. I had fun. Our team had fun. That's kind of all that matters."
Draymond Green, meanwhile, had a very harsh review of the league's new tournament. He said, "This ain’t basketball."
We'll see if the NBA eventually releases its All-Star Game ratings and addresses all the negative noise.
