Despite the disappointing loss, one LA Lakers star put up an impressive performance in their preseason opener.

The Los Angeles Lakers started off their preseason with a disappointing 103-81 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

Coming into the game, there was a lot of talk about how the Lakers would do without Luka Doncic and LeBron James, who were confirmed not to be playing.

Devin Booker’s comments about Deandre Ayton before the game raised even more concern about the Bahamian star.

And while Ayton’s disappointing Lakers debut didn’t do much to quell fan concerns, they can be happy with one of their other stars showing out.

Mike Bresnahan lauds Austin Reaves for 20-point performance

Mike Bresnahan spoke after the LA Lakers’ 22-point loss to the Phoenix Suns. While he wasn’t impressed with the team’s performance, one star caught his eye.

He applauded Austin Reaves for his 20-point performance, claiming that the star looked like he was in prime regular-season form. But without Luka Doncic and LeBron James, the Lakers’ offense didn’t flow.

“The Suns were one, maybe two steps ahead of the Lakers tonight. The Lakers were seemingly never really in it.

“I did like Austin Reaves. I thought he looked really good. He’s like in January or February form. He is good. I thought Rui had a good first half, but tailed off a little bit in the second half.

“Beyond those two, offensively, shocker. LeBron and Luka Doncic? The Lakers need those guys for a free-flowing offense.”

LA Lakers had offensive nightmare against Phoenix Suns

Bresnahan was right about one thing – without Luka Doncic or LeBron James, the Lakers’ offense just doesn’t flow very well. The Lakers shot just 31.1% from the field on the night.

If we take out Austin Reaves’ 6-11 field goals made, the Lakers shot just 26% from the field. That is an abysmal number that is unacceptable from a team with the caliber of players as the Lakers.

Head coach JJ Redick will take this team to San Francisco this weekend, but before that, he must reinforce the importance of making their shots.

The Lakers have to play at least one more preseason game without Luka Doncic, as they face the Golden State Warriors on Sunday night. But after last night, Doncic’s return can’t come soon enough.
