Veteran NBA insider Marc Stein doesn’t think Jason Kidd is looking to leave the Dallas Mavericks for the New York Knicks.

Stein covers the Mavericks in Dallas and has a strong pulse on that franchise.

“I do not think he is looking to leave Dallas,” Stein said on the DLLS Mavs podcast. “He is very settled here. His family is very settled here. And he is very close with the two superstars (Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving) who are in place.”

The Mavericks have the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They are expected to draft Duke’s Cooper Flagg.

Kidd has two years left on his contract with the Mavericks, who traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. Dallas missed the postseason this year after making the NBA Finals last year.

New York is interested in Kidd after firing Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks made the conference finals this year for the first time since 2000, losing to the Indiana Pacers in six games.

Thibodeau was hired by the Knicks in 2020. He went 226-174 in the regular season and 24-23 in the postseason and won the 2021 Coach of the Year Award.

Kidd has coached the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Mavericks, compiling a record of 362-339 in the regular season and 31-33 in the playoffs. The Hall of Famer played for the Knicks in 2012-13.

Stein reported on Monday that there is a belief among some within the Mavericks organization that the Knicks will ultimately decide against asking permission to interview Kidd.

“There is a belief among some within the Mavericks’ organization that the Knicks will ultimately decide against taking the step of asking,” Stein wrote. “As I reported Saturday, I have likewise heard from a few well-placed skeptics who believe that the Knicks would be immediately shot down if they do ask.”
