NBA insider reveals if Spurs are in talks with De’Aaron Fox over $229M extension

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox is now eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million contract extension.

Last season, Fox’s wish was granted, moving on from the Sacramento Kings in search of a bigger role with a contender.

The Kings sent him to San Antonio in a three-team deal near the deadline. But only a few months into his stint there, questions are already being raised about how long he’ll stay.

San Antonio used the #2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on Dylan Harper, another combo guard who joins Stephon Castle, last year’s Rookie of the Year and someone who’s most comfortable running point.

That leaves San Antonio with three starting-calibre guards, meaning at least one of them will have to settle for coming off the bench. It’s hard to imagine any of them being happy about it.

Fox still has one year left on his contract and is now eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension. Whether or not he ends up signing it remains to be seen.

NBA correspondent Marc Stein weighed in on the De’Aaron Fox situation, sharing what he has been hearing around the league regarding his future with the San Antonio Spurs.

“Since acquiring Fox, San Antonio has watched Stephon Castle win Rookie of the Year honours and won the rights via the draft lottery to select Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick on June 25.

“Those developments have many people wondering leaguewide: How automatic is a max for Fox now?”

The answer appears to be far from straightforward. According to NBA insider Arye Abraham, talks between Fox and the Spurs haven’t begun and aren’t expected to start anytime soon.

“Negotiations haven’t started today and won’t for a while,” he published on X.

De’Aaron Fox may be traded by San Antonio Spurs if no extension is signed

Should De’Aaron Fox and the Spurs fail to reach an agreement on a new contract, a trade would likely be the ensuing course of action.

Fox is heading into the final season of his five-year, $163 million contract, earning $37 million. That makes him a valuable trade piece if the Spurs decide to move on, with potential returns in both assets and salary cap flexibility.

The main reason for trading him would be to avoid losing him for nothing in free agency.

With Gregg Popovich now serving as team president and focusing on building around Victor Wembanyama, there’s motivation to get as much value back as possible if Fox isn’t part of their long-term plans.
