NBA Legend's Son Suffers Injury Before Season

Before the 2025-26 NBA season even starts, there have already been a number of injuries. For one, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is expected to be out until at least mid-November due to sciatica.

Sacramento Kings big man Domantas Sabonis and Phoenix Suns guard Jalen Green are also set to miss the start of the season due to hamstring issues. There's also Miami Heat sharpshooter Tyler Herro, who is projected to return only by mid-November as he recovers from an ankle injury, per ESPN.

On Saturday, just a few days before the season kicks off, another name was added to the NBA injury list: Memphis Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr.

The son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen and ex-wife Larsa Pippen suffered a left big toe injury. According to the Grizzlies, the 24-year-old Pippen will undergo a sesamoidectomy to address the issue.

Memphis did not provide a specific timeline for his return, but Shams Charania of ESPN reported that he will be re-evaluated in 12 weeks. That means the earliest Pippen could return is early 2026.

It's certainly an unfortunate break for the young Pippen, who was poised to have a better year with the Grizzlies.

Pippen, who played for the Los Angeles Lakers as an undrafted rookie in 2022-23, spent the last two seasons with the Grizzlies. In that span, he has appeared in 100 games for Memphis — starting in 37 contests — and averaged 10.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Pippen's injury is also another setback for the Grizzlies, who are already set to be without Brandon Clarke and Zach Edey at the start of the season due to their own injuries.
