The last time Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves played in an NBA game was in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals in May, when they suffered a season-ending 124-94 loss to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the eventual champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Wolves were back in action on Wednesday night in their season-opener against the Portland Trail Blazers, and Edwards took a step towards erasing that heartbreaking loss to the Thunder with a win in their first game of the new NBA season.
Edwards went off for 41 points on 14-of-28 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds, an assist, and five triples, leading Minnesota to a hard-fought 118-114 road victory at Moda Center.
Edwards was named an All-Star for a third straight year last season behind averages of 27.6 points (a career-high), 5.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals. The former Georgia Bulldogs star also knocked down 4.1 triples per game on a 39.5% clip, leading the Timberwolves to a 50-32 record for the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference.
Edwards’ performance on Wednesday night is an indication that he wants to take his game even further this season. In fact, the 24-year-old was able to make franchise history in his very first game of the new campaign.
The NBA took to social media to announce Edwards’ incredible feat.
“Most points by a Minnesota player in a season opener? @theantedwards_ with 41 tonight! What a start to Ant's Year 6 ” the league posted on X.

The previous record belonged to Karl-Anthony Towns, who is now with the New York Knicks. Towns dropped 36 points in Minnesota’s season-opener against the Brooklyn Nets on Oct. 23, 2019. Edwards’ 41 now has him sitting atop another franchise record as he continues to establish himself as one of the greatest players in Timberwolves history — at just 24 years old.
Edwards, who was initially questionable to play against Portland due to a back issue , will want to keep his foot on the gas in Minnesota’s next game. This comes in the form of a road matchup against Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night. The Wolves travel to L.A. to battle the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena, with tipoff scheduled at 10:00 p.m. ET.
