Warriors

The Warriors are bringing back Steve Kerr. They are not bringing back his top assistants.

According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse will not return next season after their contracts expired. Stotts served as the offensive coordinator, while Stackhouse handled the defense.

Neither departure was described as a dismissal.

“I enjoyed my time with Steve, the staff and players,” Stotts said. “Nothing but well wishes.”

Stackhouse is already pursuing head coaching opportunities, per the report. Kerr will now look to reshape his bench, with former Pelicans coach Willie Green among the names to watch.

Kris Weems is expected to remain in a front-of-the-bench role.

Rockets

The Rockets have some decisions ahead with their young core.

League chatter suggests Amen Thompson may not land a full rookie max extension this offseason, according to Varun Shankar of The Houston Chronicle. A deal in the 20 to 23 percent range of the cap has been floated.

Meanwhile, Tari Eason is expected to draw a deal around $22 million annually as he approaches restricted free agency.

Houston has flexibility. How it uses it will help define the next step.

Mavericks

The Mavericks are putting their new front office structure in place under Masai Ujiri.

Ujiri’s first major move was hiring Mike Schmitz as general manager. It is a pairing built on familiarity and trust.

“I’ve known him for many, many years,” Ujiri said, per The Athletic’s Christian Clark. “Incredible scout. Incredible leader.”

Ujiri’s track record speaks for itself. From Denver to Toronto, he built contenders and won a title in 2019.

Now he gets another shot in Dallas. The foundation is being set.
