As the NBA season continues to take shape, the race at the top is getting tighter by the week. Contenders are separating themselves, dark horses are making noise, and every game is starting to carry extra weight. With momentum shifting and stars stepping up on both ends of the floor, here’s a look at the top 10 teams in the NBA right now and how they stack up heading into the next stretch of the season.

Top 10 Right Now! NBA Power Rankings

10. Phoenix Suns

The Suns are now in the power rankings for two straight weeks, and they beat the OKC Thunder off a last-second Devin Booker 3-pointer. The Suns have had good games and ok games these past few weeks, but are consistently trending upwards as the season progresses.

9. Boston Celtics

The Celtics are a really solid all-around team, Jaylen Brown has been outstanding as the leader of this group, and they have built a lot of chemistry over the course of the season. The Celtics, despite dealing with a new team this year from years past, have a really solid opportunity to make it out of the Eastern Conference.

8. Minnesota Timberwolves

The Timberwolves have been floating around this area for what feels like the entire season. They have been a really good team, but have not taken that next step. The Timberwolves are an inherently competitive team because of their defensive mentality and the competitiveness of the players on the team. They are a super fun team to watch and are improving with every game.

7. Houston Rockets

The Rockets are similar to the Timberwolves in their ability to be floating around this range in the power rankings all season. They have had a few weeks where they take jumps because of the big wins they get against great teams, including their recent upset of the Suns when Kevin Durant did Kevin Durant things. The Rockets are a contender in the Western Conference; their team chemistry and composition allow them to have a chance against anyone.

6. Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets have and will be missing Nikola Jokic for about a month; they have needed some of their other guys to step up, and they have, to an extent. There is only so much the Nuggets can do without the MVP of the NBA and one of the best offensive players in NBA history. Jamal Murray has taken a step up since Jokic’s absence, and the Nuggets just have to remain floating.

5. Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers had a small part of the season where they were struggling a little bit, but since then, they have been on fire. Lebron James has felt like he has in the past few seasons, where the Lakers still feel unstoppable when he is at his best. The Lakers are on fire right now and in third place in the Western Conference.

4. New York Knicks

The Knicks, after being on a very hot streak in December, are 5-5 in their last 10 games and have been struggling. They were contending with the Pistons for the No. 1 spot in the Eastern Conference, but since then, they have been struggling to win many games at all. The Knicks fall to No. 4 in this week’s power rankings.

3. Detroit Pistons

The Pistons are 3rd in the power rankings for the second week in a row, but they had their number two spot taken by 2 different teams. The Pistons picked up a huge win against the Cleveland Cavaliers in a thrilling game. The Pistons have continued to play great team basketball and are led by JB Bickerstaff in great fashion.

2. San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs are simply a great team; it is no longer about when they will explode with all their young talent, but they are here right now. They have put everything together a lot sooner than most had anticipated, and are a true contender for the NBA Finals. They just have everything you would want in one of the top teams in the NBA.

1. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have not been as dominant as they were at the beginning of the season, but they are still clearly the best team in the NBA and the team to beat. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is making a case for his 2nd MVP, and the Thunder are still beating most teams they play, just not to the level they originally were.
