The New York Knicks stunned the NBA world this week by parting ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau, just days after their Eastern Conference Finals exit at the hands of the Indiana Pacers. Despite leading the Knicks to their deepest playoff run in over two decades, Thibodeau is out. Now, the franchise is actively searching for a new head coach who can unlock the full potential of Jalen Brunson and take the team to the next level.

The decision to fire Thibodeau came as a surprise to many, especially after Brunson publicly backed him following the playoff loss. Most assumed the veteran coach had earned another shot to guide the team, but the Knicks’ front office clearly believes the time is right for a new direction. With Brunson blossoming into a bona fide superstar, the pressure is on to bring in a coach who can elevate the team from contender to legitimate title threat.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, two names high on New York’s list are Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks and Ime Udoka of the Houston Rockets. Both are currently under contract, which complicates matters, but the Knicks are reportedly looking to secure permission to speak with them. Kidd’s success managing talent in Dallas and Udoka’s ability to turn around Houston’s young roster make them intriguing options.

Michael Malone Leads Betting Odds to Coach New York Knicks

If the pursuit of either Jason Kidd or Ime Udoka falls short, the New York Knicks could pivot to other notable names. Michael Malone, recently dismissed by the Denver Nuggets, has emerged as a favorite among betting circles to take over in New York. However, a report by Stefan Bondy of the New York Post notes that the Knicks haven’t reached out to him yet, casting uncertainty on his status.

Johnnie Bryant, a former Knicks assistant now with the Cleveland Cavaliers, is also gaining traction. Known for his player development skills and familiarity with the Knicks’ system, Bryant is considered a rising coaching prospect. Other candidates reportedly in the mix include Mike Budenholzer, Jay Wright, and current Knicks assistant Rick Brunson.

With Jalen Brunson entering his prime and expectations rising in Madison Square Garden, the Knicks’ coaching hire could shape the trajectory of the franchise for years. Whoever takes over will be tasked not just with winning — but with building a championship-caliber team in New York.
