The Jimmy Butler saga derailed the Miami Heat's 2024-25 season before it began to build any momentum. Since then, Erik Spoelstra's team has been in an unofficial retooling phase.
Miami has some exciting young talent in Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and the recently drafted Kasparas Jakucionis. It also has some viable high-level talent in Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo and Norman Powell.
However, the lack of a star-level talent and reliable depth means that Miami's current roster isn't seen as a threat in the Eastern Conference. It would appear that those within NBA circles would agree with that assessment, too.
In an August 12 article, Heat insider Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald shared the views of an anonymous Eastern Conference scout.
"Let’s start with who’s better. I see six teams, for sure: New York, Cleveland, Orlando, Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee. Philadelphia is better if they’re healthy," the scout said. "So I would say the Heat’s a solid play-in team...It’s around a .500 team. If they won 45, it would be a great year. They’re not bad, but they’re not good. Chicago is mediocre."
If the Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics weren't taking an injury-forced gap year, the Heat could be in danger of missing out on the postseason. Pat Riley is yet to find the missing pieces that would make the Heat's roster puzzle fall into place.
Last season, Miami ranked 21st for offensive rating and ninth for defensive rating. The hope is that Powell's addition will improve the team's overall shooting efficiency. However, there's still a genuine lack of balance within the rotation.
Unless the Heat are willing to part with some of their top talents or best young players, the team is going to keep floating aimlessly toward NBA purgatory. A rebuild is needed to right the ship and get the franchise back on track.
Otherwise, Riley will need to get lucky in the trade or free-agency market. The anonymous scout's opinion may have been harsh, but it was also true. Hopefully, those within Miami's front office are listening and figuring out how to get things back on track.
