NBA Summer League Star Sends Message To Spurs, Olympiacos

There’s always at least one player that manages to turn heads during the NBA’s annual Summer Leagues. While many of them are rookies who have been drafted by the franchise they were suiting up for, plenty have been players who went undrafted or are a little older. Those in the second category are more likely to look for an opportunity to land with any NBA team, some even attracting offers from international clubs. This year, one of those Summer League standouts is none other than David Jones-Garcia, who appeared in eight games for the San Antonio Spurs.

The 23-year-old averaged 22.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals in 25.3 minutes per game across those contests. He played so well in fact that shortly after the Spurs played in their Summer League, he “was approached with a tempting offer by Olympiacos as the Reds were willing to give him a salary above 2 million per year,” according to Eurohoops reporter Michalis Stefanou.

Jones-Garcia plans “to continue with” the Spurs, per Stefanou. No agreement has been made between him and San Antonio for a standard or two-way contract. However, the tea leaves appear to be trending in that direction.

Even if the dominant Dominican didn’t stick with San Antonio though, there 29 other teams that could be interested. Given his age, size, body of work and production, many of them should be. It’s also worth noting that while he remains a score-first player, he plays with a burgeoning team mentality.

To that point, Jones-Garcia averaged just 1.8 assists per game in college. However, he dished out 3.1 dimes per game in the G League’s last season. Numbers aside, the adjustment in his approach and his coachability are both impressive in their own right.

So, it remains to be seen what exactly will come of Jones-Garcia. However, wherever he winds up, that team will be getting a gifted offensive player. One who is willing to bet on himself, at that.
