Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd coached the Brooklyn Nets for one season in 2013-14 after retiring from the NBA in 2013.
The Nets went 44-38 in 2013-14. Kidd's group beat the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the 2014 playoffs in seven games before losing to LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the second round in five games.
A fascinating event then took place in the offseason of 2014. Kidd decided he wanted to leave Brooklyn for the Milwaukee Bucks.
So, the Bucks traded two second-round draft picks to the Nets to get Kidd, the Hall of Fame point guard who is third in NBA history in assists.
The New York Knicks are interested in hiring Kidd as their next head coach after firing Tom Thibodeau. However, the Mavericks won’t let the Knicks speak to Kidd, who has two years left on his contract with Dallas.
If, for some reason, Kidd decides he wants to leave the Mavericks for the Knicks, New York would have to trade for the NBA legend and Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade idea between Dallas and New York:
Dallas Mavericks receive: 2026 Washington Wizards protected first-round pick (via NY) and 2026 first-round swap rights (top-4 protected)
New York Knicks receive: Jason Kidd
Kidd would become the first coach in NBA history to be traded twice if the Knicks trade for him.
The 52-year-old Kidd has a coaching record of 362-339 in the regular season and 31-33 in the playoffs with the Nets, Bucks and Mavericks. He played for the Knicks for one season in 2012-13.
By all accounts, it doesn't appear Kidd wants to leave the Mavericks for the Knicks.
However, if he changes his mind, New York will have to part ways with draft picks to get Kidd.
