The speculations around Kevin Durant pairing up with the San Antonio Spurs’ big man Victor Wembanyama become more intense as rumors of the former MVP expressing his desire to land at Texas gain traction. However, insider Grant Afseth had a different perspective, providing crucial information about the Spurs’ motives ahead of the next season.
Talks of Durant landing at the Spurs started when Arizona Sports 98.7 broadcaster John Gambadoro made the bold claim last week.
“I expect Kevin Durant will be traded from the Phoenix Suns next week,” Gambadoro said. “There’s a lot of stuff out there. Some of it’s accurate, a lot of it is not accurate. We’ve said it all along that he will be traded by the draft. Outside shot that something happens sooner. But I’m gonna say that next week, my expectations are Kevin Durant is traded.”
Afseth soon got a hold of the speculations. In his article at RG on Thursday, he wrote that the Spurs remain skeptical about acquiring the 37-year-old Kevin Durant, with the team preferring to use their No.2 draft pick to get Dylan Harper, a highly anticipated prospect of his batch.
“Doubt is increasing that Durant will land in San Antonio and there appears to be no clear traction,” Afseth reported. “While the Spurs have continued to be one of the teams linked to Durant, league observers question whether there is enough potential alignment between the Spurs and Suns on a possible trade.”
Afseth also added that Durant’s age is a significant concern among San Antonio, believing it may not be incompatible with Wembanyama’s timeline. The 2024 ROTY, in reference, is just 21 years old. Moreover, the team is also concerned about what players they’ll offer for KD.
With the NBA Draft commencing on June 25, the Spurs’ decision on whether to acquire Kevin Durant remains the source of rumors for many.
On Wednesday, CBS Sports writer Sam Quinn provided mock trades for teams seeking to acquire Kevin Durant. Among them is the much-anticipated San Antonio Spurs, with Quinn providing his insight on giving away key players for KD, but with consequences.
The mock trade is as follows: the Spurs give away Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, Harrison Barnes, and a No. 14 pick in exchange for Durant. With this trade, San Antonio’s stars, such as Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, and Victor Wembanyama, remain, forming a supersquad with KD.
However, Quinn also included that the Suns might be skeptical of the offer, especially since the players mentioned might be incompatible with their needs. Moreover, the Spurs’ teams are out of the question. Still, their goal of getting Kevin Durant on another team remains imminent.
