NBA reporter Keith Smith of Spotrac spoke to a Brooklyn Nets front office executive who thinks newcomer Michael Porter Jr. could come “close” to winning the scoring title next season.
The Nets acquired Porter Jr. from the Denver Nuggets in the Cameron Johnson trade.
“We’re transitioning our roster, of course. We’re going to play a lot of young players. But we need some vets to balance that. And, of course, we need to score some points,” the Nets front office executive said. “Porter will help us a ton there. I’m not saying he’ll win the scoring title, but I think it could be close.”
Michael Porter Jr. is a talented scorer and shooter. He’s also not gun-shy.
With the Nets not having a bona fide No. 1 scoring option on offense, look for Porter Jr. to take a lot of shots next season.
In 77 games for the Nuggets last season, Porter Jr. averaged 18.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 50.4% from the field, 39.5% from beyond the arc and 76.8% from the free-throw line.
Porter Jr. was the 14th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. He missed his entire rookie season with a back injury. The 2023 NBA champion has career averages of 16.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
The 27-year-old Porter Jr. has scored 39 points in a game twice. It will be fascinating to see how many points he averages next season.
