The Nets have some flexibility. Now comes the hard part.
According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the biggest question facing Brooklyn this offseason may be what to do with Michael Porter Jr. — extend him or explore a trade.
Porter has delivered. In his first season with the Nets, he’s averaging a career-high 24.2 points while continuing to shoot better than 36 percent from three. When he’s been on the floor, the production has been there.
Availability has improved, too. Before a recent hamstring strain, Porter had missed just 14 games since the start of the 2023-24 season — a notable shift after an injury-plagued start to his career.
All of it points to a potential payday.
Marks notes Porter will be eligible for a four-year deal worth up to $234 million. That’s significant, and it forces Brooklyn to decide how committed it is long-term.
The Nets aren’t in a position where tanking makes much sense, with the Rockets holding a future pick swap. They’re expected to enter the offseason with a high lottery pick and potentially $45–55 million in cap space.
In other words, options. Which makes this decision even more important.
