New LeBron James-to-Cleveland Rumor Emerges From Unexpected Source

Wait! What? With a thousand different sources giving clues of LeBron James joining the Cleveland Cavaliers, the latest one has caught everyone off guard.

The offseason speculation surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers veteran forward and the Cavs just took another bizarre turn.

Only days after the Celtics swept Cleveland out of the Eastern Conference Finals, local radio exploded when a caller on ESPN Cleveland claimed former NBA star Charles Oakley told him directly that James is “95 percent coming to Cleveland.”

The caller, who said he previously owned Corbo’s Bakery in Cleveland Heights, claimed Oakley told him he recently met with Maverick Carter, LeBron’s longtime business partner and close friend.

“Charles Oakley came to my bakery all the time,” the caller said. “He told me he met with Maverick Carter last week and he told me LeBron James is 95% coming to Cleveland.”

That quickly sent Cavaliers fans into a frenzy. To be clear, this is not coming from a verified NBA insider or league reporter. It was simply a fan calling into a local radio station. Still, the timing of the rumor has only added fuel to the growing speculation around James’ future.

The 41-year-old becomes a free agent this summer after another disappointing playoff exit with the Lakers. Los Angeles was swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder, and James later admitted he remains uncertain about what comes next in his career.

Meanwhile, Cleveland suddenly looks like a team searching for another superstar after its humiliating loss to New York.

Should the Cavaliers Go All In For LeBron James?

The idea of LeBron James returning to Cleveland once again no longer feels like pure fantasy. However, from a basketball perspective, the fit actually makes sense.

Cleveland already has its core in place with Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. During the Eastern Conference Finals, the roster clearly lacked another experienced wing creator who could settle the offense when things unraveled.

Even at 41, James still provides exactly that. The Cavaliers also have the type of roster that could maximize him at this stage of his career. Cleveland has shooters like Sam Merrill, Max Strus, Dean Wade, and Jaylon Tyson who can thrive off LeBron’s playmaking.

Mobley and Allen provide the defensive support he no longer has to carry himself. Of course, the biggest obstacle is money.

Cleveland already faces deep salary cap restrictions after going all-in with the Harden trade, and the four-time NBA champion historically shows little interest in taking major pay cuts.

That reality makes a reunion complicated financially, even if both sides have an interest. Still, if there is one scenario where a discounted deal could make sense, it would be a final run back home.
