The New York Knicks are in search of a new head coach for the 2025-26 NBA season, following the dismissal of Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years under Thibs. While making the conference finals is a significant achievement for many, New York’s basketball team doesn’t feel the same way.
The Knicks want to contend for the NBA championship. However, they don’t think Thibs is the right job for the team to reach its true potential. There have been whispers since Thibs was fired regarding which coach will succeed him and, ideally, guide the team to a championship.
One of the names considered for the position is Jason Kidd. However, there is one problem: Kidd is still the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Recently, NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson revealed that the former NBA star is interested in inheriting the position.
Robinson posted on X (formerly Twitter) about the Knicks potentially hiring Kidd, according to a reliable source.
“Jason Kidd wants that job,” Robinson wrote. “When a team doesn’t shut down an interview request, it usually means the coach wants out. The Rockets shut it down with Ime Udoka immediately. The Mavericks haven’t said a word about Kidd and the Knicks.”

According to Robinson’s prior report, the New York Knicks were interested in hiring Kidd as their head coach five years ago. At that time, the 2011 champion was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers. The 6-foot-4 former point guard opted to stay with the Lakers and eventually took over the head coaching vacancy in Dallas when Rick Carlisle stepped down in 2021.
Despite the success with the New York Knicks, the management wasn’t satisfied with what Thibs did. They expected that the organization would beat the Indiana Pacers and compete in the NBA Finals. However, that wasn’t the outcome of their postseason run.
Over the weekend, NBA insider Vincent Goodwill revealed which person was responsible for the firing of Thibs. According to his report, Knicks owner James Dolan “spearheaded” the firing of the 2008 champion.
“What was clear was Thibodeau’s firing being spearheaded by Knicks owner James Dolan, sources told Yahoo Sports. Dolan and team president Leon Rose held exit meetings with key Knicks players and the complaints were clear. Dolan, whom sources said was never a huge Thibodeau fan through the years, asked the questions in the meeting while Rose took a secondary role,” Goodwill reported.

Given his position as team owner, he has a massive influence that could affect the organization. The New York Knicks want to build on their success but will have to do it without Thibs.
