The New York Knicks are moving on from head coach Tom Thibodeau. It was announced by team president Leon Rose via a statement released on Tuesday. Thibs’ firing was unexpected after he led the Knicks to one of the franchise’s best seasons in 25 years. He broke the Eastern Conference finals drought and led the organization to its first conference finals appearance since 2000.
In the statement, Rose said that New York is focused on winning a championship. However, they believe Thibs isn’t the right coach for that.
“Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans,” Rose said via a statement. “This pursuit led us to the decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we’ve decided to move in another direction. We can’t thank Tom enough for pouring his heart and soul into each and every day of being the New York Knicks head coach.”
What several players thought of a coach was made public on Wednesday, reportedly by Sam Amico of HoopsWire. However, it wasn’t about Thibs. Rather, it was about assistant coach Rick Brunson, the father of All-Star guard Jalen Brunson.
“Per Hoops Wire sources, multiple Knicks players have been unhappy with the presence of assistant coach Rick Brunson, the father of star guard Jalen Brunson. What that issue is, exactly, has not been determined, though sources suggested that Rick has had too big a say in things,” Amico wrote.

“One source called Rick the person with the most power in the entire organization. His status is uncertain following Thibodeau’s dismissal, though considering he’s Jalen’s dad, many assume Rick will remain with the team in some capacity.”
However, Amico reported that the father-son duo are big supporters of Thibodeau.
In the five years that Thibs was the head coach, he proved that the New York Knicks could be contenders under his leadership. However, the organization didn’t feel strongly about bringing him back for a sixth season.
In a report written by Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, it was revealed that the franchise doesn’t think Thibs is the right coach to lead them to break their championship drought.
“Knicks say Thibs wasn’t the coach to get them to the promised land…but of course it’s a little bit more complicated…My understanding’s that Thibodeau’s nonnegotiable personality was also grating on some players & members of the organization,” Bondy wrote.

During his time with the New York Knicks, Thibs had a 226-174 record. The Knicks are the third team where he served as a head coach.
