The New York Knicks have been one of the most active teams in the trade market over the past two seasons.
While there is a lot of uncertainty around the New York Knicks right now due to their ongoing coaching search, you cannot question their ambition.
The Knicks decided to axe head coach Tom Thibodeau despite reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, keen to reach another level.
Their desperation to win a championship has been illustrated by their three trades conducted over the past 18 months.
The move to acquire Karl-Anthony Towns split opinion, but the majority view is that the Knicks came out on the right side of that deal.
Trading for Mikal Bridges was a big swing. It was a move that clearly strengthened the team, with the only question coming over just how many picks they gave up.
One trade that was a slam dunk success, unequivocally in the Knicks’ favor, was the move to acquire OG Anunoby.
The New York Knicks agreed a deal in December 2023 with the Toronto Raptors to acquire OG Anunoby, a player perfectly suited to Tom Thibodeau’s system.
In exchange the Raptors received RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and a second round draft pick.
Now 18 months on, the Raptors are willing to part ways with at least one of the two players.
Marc Stein reports Toronto are happy to trade away either Barrett or Quickley in order to land a ‘significant roster upgrade’.
And while most teams would trade away any player to make a ‘significant roster upgrade’, this reflects what the Raptors failed to do in 2023.
They gave away the best player in the deal, allowing OG Anunoby to join the New York Knicks.
The Raptors’ stance in 2025 is reflective of their current ambitions, compared to where they were in late 2023.
Toronto were still busy tearing down their 2019 title winning roster, later trading away Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers.
Now they are beginning to dream big again, with NBA insider Brian Windhorst reporting they are looking to land a ‘big fish’ in free agency.
This has even seen the Raptors linked ambitiously for Giannis Antetokounmpo, also speculatively connected with the Knicks.
