Nick Wright Explains Why Victor Wembanyama Falls Short in His MVP Race

Victor Wembanyama’s historic late-season surge has pushed him firmly into the MVP conversation, but not everyone is buying the case.

Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright laid out a blunt breakdown of why the Spurs star still falls short compared to other frontrunners. Speaking on the debate, Wright pointed to several gaps that, in his view, are too significant to ignore.

“You have one guy of all the candidates who is far and away the least impactful passer,” he said. “The least impactful scorer. He has played the fewest games and by far the fewest minutes. Also, he doesn’t even have the best record. I know he is the best defender in the league but that’s not enough to me for him to close that gap.”

It’s a sharp contrast to how many around the league view the 22-year-old. Wembanyama has been the engine behind San Antonio’s rise, anchoring both ends while leading a young roster back into contention.

His defensive impact, in particular, has been unmatched, with many already penciling him in as the Defensive Player of the Year.

But Wright’s argument leans into traditional MVP criteria, that has to do with availability, offensive load, and team dominance. Compared to names like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic, the Spurs phenom still has ground to cover in those areas.

There’s also the narrative element. The Alien publicly endorsing his own MVP case raised eyebrows, with Wright suggesting that kind of confidence is often labeled differently depending on the player.

The reality likely sits somewhere in between as the French star is undeniably one of the most impactful players in the league already, but whether that translates to MVP this season depends on how voters weigh dominance versus completeness.

Nick Wright Puts The Whole League Against Victor Wembanyama

While he had his interesting take, Nick Wright didn’t throw himself right into the middle of the Victor Wembanyama debate for the first time.

Speaking on his podcast, Wright argued that despite all the hype, the Spurs star isn’t a top-10 offensive player in the league right now.

He went down the list racking Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Stephen Curry, Anthony Edwards, Devin Booker, Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum, Cade Cunningham, even Tyrese Haliburton and Jalen Brunson, placing each of them ahead of Wembanyama purely on offense.

It’s the kind of take that instantly divides people, especially considering the season Wembanyama is having. The numbers are elite, the flashes are undeniable, and at times, he looks unguardable.

Many of the names he listed have already proven they can carry offenses at the highest level, especially in playoff environments. Wembanyama, for all his brilliance, is still building that part of his game.
