Nick Wright has given air to a conversation about two of the biggest names in basketball history. The sports analyst shared a new theory regarding the dynamic between Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
On May 1, 2026, in an episode of his show, “What’s Wright?”, he reacted to recent comments made by James. The Los Angeles Lakers star spoke to ESPN on April 29, admitting he hoped he made Jordan proud.
Wright used this moment to share what he called “just my speculation” regarding the relationship. He suggested Jordan grew less comfortable as James got closer to becoming the greatest player ever.

Wright believes it is about a threat to a legacy. He noted there was never an actual relationship for Jordan to sever. To build his case, Wright brought up Kobe Bryant as a sharp contrast. Bryant openly modeled his entire game and persona after Jordan.
However, the fans viewed Bryant as having a ceiling just below the top spot. Because Bryant was not a threat to his stature, Jordan felt completely comfortable putting his arms around him.
James’ longevity, statistical milestones, and the historic 2016 Finals comeback against the 73-win Golden State Warriors changed the conversation. Wright theorized that this rise made Jordan uncomfortable.
Wright then pointed to the release of “The Last Dance” documentary as key evidence. It is a known fact that Jordan approved the long-delayed footage in June 2016. He gave the green light on the day of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ championship parade.
The analyst also referenced a claim from Michael Wilbon. Wilbon stated Jordan privately told the media to take it easy on James during his early years. Wright uses this to show there is no hatred, just a deliberate distance.
While Wright’s theory provides a guess at the tension, the history between these two icons tells its own story.
The truth is, there has never been a close friendship between the two legends. They never shared the court in the NBA, as Jordan retired in 2003, the same year James entered the league. They also never partnered on any major business projects or endorsements.
In the early 2000s, a young James idolized Jordan. He even chose to wear the number 23 jersey to honor him. When they first met in April 2003, James described it as feeling like meeting God.
From 2003 to 2010, James praised his idol’s game. He even pushed the league to retire the number 23 across all teams. James switched to number 6 during his time with the Miami Heat. However, he returned to wearing 23 when he went back to Cleveland in 2014.
In 2014, the Heat played against the Jordan-owned Charlotte Bobcats in the playoffs. James later began passing Jordan’s statistical records in 2017. Their most memorable public moment came in 2022, sharing a warm embrace at the NBA All-Star Game.
In 2025, James mentioned on a podcast that they do not talk because he is still playing and focused on his game. In his 2026 ESPN interview, he noted their playing styles are totally different.
Jordan has called James one of the best players in the world. However, Jordan avoids GOAT comparisons, stating it is unfair to compare different eras.
The distance between them might just be due to different eras and busy lives. What do you think about Nick Wright’s theory on this legendary dynamic?
