The Minnesota Timberwolves might be losing a key piece from their two consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances. Nickeil Alexander-Walker is a superb player, but the Timberwolves might not be able to afford him.
In the meantime, Alexander-Walker is garnering interest from other NBA teams. That does not bode well for the Timberwolves because they would love to keep him, but the money might not work out for them.
A reliable three-and-D guard will always be valuable around the NBA. Alexander-Walker has emerged as one of the best players who fit that prototype. He does not have eye-popping stats, but he always stepped up for the Timberwolves.
He was one of the team's most reliable players, as he always found ways to help them. Alexander-Walker was mostly the backup guard to either Mike Conley Jr. or Anthony Edwards. He did a fantastic job, as he was a key cog in the system during two Western Conference Finals series.
The most concrete interest from a team that Alexander-Walker is receiving is from the Atlanta Hawks. He will not be a starter there, but it is a perfect fit. Alexander-Walker would benefit from playing alongside Trae Young and Dyson Daniels.
Zaccharie Rissacher and Jalen Johnson are also part of that core, which bodes well for a floor spacer like Alexander-Walker. He can focus on getting to his spots while defending at a high level.
One of the more intriguing pieces of intel to come out of yesterday’s piece that teams around the league at monitoring:

Nickeil Alexander-Walker’s FA and where he ends up. One interesting team mentioned: The Atlanta Hawks.
Atlanta owns a $25.2M TPE they want to utilize. https://t.co/ba6jWUA0pV
Bringing Naz Reid and Julius Randle back could spell the end of Alexander-Walker's time in Minnesota. Since they are likely to do that, Nickeil might find it best to move to a team like Atlanta or the Orlando Magic as a backup to Jalen Suggs and Desmond Bane.
Apart from Atlanta and Orlando, Alexander-Walker can gain more interest around the league. If he is not re-signed by the Timberwolves, he fits the profile that every team needs with a good shooter, defender, and secondary ball-handler.
While it is unlikely, Alexander-Walker can choose to stay in Minnesota. The Timberwolves might be willing to cough up the cash, especially with new owners Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore.
Retaining their core could be vital for the Timberwolves because he fits in perfectly. Edwards has always praised him for his hard work, and they can keep competing for a title together.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker on his potential return

"I'll never burn a bridge. — This is the only place I've had a real opportunity to play and be the best version of myself. — There's no way that I'm gonna go into the off-season and X-out in Minnesota. That'd be crazy." pic.twitter.com/KVq8KD803x
This probably won't happen, but Alexander-Walker is open to staying. They just have to iron out the contract and make sure he is getting paid because he deserves a bigger contract.
