The Denver Nuggets do not look like a contender at the moment. Friday night's double-digit loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers showed as much. They dropped a disappointing 149-135 ball game inside of Ball Arena.
There was a particular lowlight from this one. The 149 points surrendered by the Nuggets is a season-high for Denver, in all the wrong ways.
Nikola Jokic has been far from the root of the Nuggets' problems. Most would still consider him the frontrunner for the NBA MVP award this season. The Nuggets superstar recorded another triple-double in the loss too.
However, when it came to the post-game press conference, Jokic had an interesting quote when discussing accountability.
"We are not even close where we're supposed to be," the three-time MVP told reporters. "But I think [considering] how bad we play, I think we're in a good spot. I think we need to start thinking about what I can do for this team to help, not what can the team do to help me."
Jokic continued: "Is it screening? Is it rolling? Is it passing? Is it shooting? Is it rebounding? Is it playing defense? I think we should, I call it point this way, not this way, right? I think that's the quote of the day, point this way, not that way."
For clarification, the Nuggets superstar was suggesting to point at oneself, rather than outward in the second half of his comments.
It sounds like Jokic wants himself, and the rest of the Nuggets, to focus on identifying what each individual can bring to the table to elevate the team out of their current middling position. Denver is 16-13 this season, which ranks 7th in the Western Conference at this time.
The Nuggets will get the opportunity to practice what Jokic is trying to preach on Saturday night. They will face the Detroit Pistons in the second part of a back-to-back on their schedule.
