The Denver Nuggets have lost Game 7 of the conference semifinals two years in a row since winning the championship in 2023 against the Miami Heat.
The Nuggets lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2024 and fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder this year.
Denver superstar center Nikola Jokic is eligible to sign a three-year, $212.5 million extension this summer. The Nuggets will offer that deal to the three-time MVP and one-time Finals MVP.
However, one NBA writer is predicting that Jokic will not sign that extension with the Nuggets.
"Jokic noted Denver's lack of depth after its playoff exit, only for managing governor Josh Kroenke to extol the benefits of running it back," Dan Favale of Bleacher Report wrote. "That is unacceptable.
"In fairness, the Nuggets are not working with many resources. They can trade just one first-round pick this summer and won't have more than the mini mid-level exception of $5.7 million to spend in free agency. That isn't Jokic's problem. This team should be working its butt off to improve around the best player in the world. The past two offseasons have seen them do the exact opposite."
Jokic has spent his entire career with the Nuggets, who fired Michael Malone with three games left in the regular season.
David Adelman took over as the interim head coach and was named the full-time head coach in May.
A future Hall of Famer, Jokic is widely regarded as the top player in the NBA. If he doesn't sign an extension with the Nuggets, Denver's front office would be under pressure to upgrade the roster, which, in the long run, could benefit both sides.
Jokic played in 70 games this season, averaging 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists per game.
In the 2025 playoffs, Jokic put up 26.2 points, 12.7 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game against the Los Angeles Clippers and the Thunder.
