The Boston Celtics had a player who put up a strong Summer League performance, but they’re hesitant to commit to him.
The Boston Celtics are undergoing a period of massive transformation right now. After Jayson Tatum’s Achilles tear in the playoffs, the star is going to be unavailable to play for them next season.
Going into the new season, Jaylen Brown can play the leadership role on the Celtics, something he has expressed frustration about not getting to do.
Brad Stevens made some moves to address their massive wage bill. One of the biggest moves was the Celtics trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Hawks.
But his departure may have made way for a new star to emerge. In the NBA Summer League, Charles Bassey impressed Celtics fans with his performances.
The young center showed he has the potential to play in the NBA. But is Bassey going to get a contract from the Boston Celtics?
An anonymous Boston Celtics front office executive spoke to Keith Smith of Spotrac in Las Vegas. When talking about standout Charles Bassey, he gave a hesitant answer.
While the Celtics really like Charles Bassey, they’re not sure about the possibility of adding him to their team. The Celtics want to keep working with him and will try to continue their working relationship.
“Considering he got added to our team so late, this was an awesome run for him. No idea if we’ll have roster space for him or not.
“But we’d love to keep working with Charles and see if we can make something work.”
Bassey was phenomenal for the Celtics in the Summer League, averaging 15.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks in three games.
Several Celtics executives and coaches also addressed other Summer League players like Jordan Walsh and Hugo Gonzalez, with both stars earning rave reviews.
Jordan Walsh: “This is sort of a make-or-break year for him. The minutes will be there if he takes them. This summer was a good start.”
Hugo Gonzalez: “I don’t care about the shooting numbers. His legs were Jello. He was exhausted. But he competed. He wants to win.
“The shot looked good before his legs went. We’ll take it slow, but he’s going to get real minutes as a rookie.”
Walsh impressed Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla with his intensity at the Summer League as well. It appears the top brass in Boston are keeping an eye on their young stars.
The Celtics have some tremendous prospects to choose from. Hopefully, they make the right decisions ahead of the new season.
