Basketball fans were shocked when rumors arose of Russell Westbrook leaving the NBA for Hapoel Tel Aviv in a contract “never seen before in European basketball.” However, on Monday, the Israelite team made it clear that they are, in no way, seeking the 36-year-old Westbrook.
The speculation began when reporter Nemanja Zoric tweeted in early June that Hapoel Tel Aviv had made “initial contact” with Westbrook.
“I’m told the Eurocup champions are planning to make him an offer with a salary never seen before in European basketball,” Zoric posted on X.
The rumors intensified when Westbrook declined the Denver Nuggets’ $3.5 million player option on Saturday. The Nuggets previously lost against the Oklahoma City Thunder during the Semifinals, shattering once expectations of the team becoming Finals contenders.
However, a report from Vuk-Milos Petrovic changed the narrative. The reporter relayed a statement from Hapoel Tel Aviv’s GM, George Hinas, regarding the team’s involvement in the Russell Westbrook hearsay.
“That’s 100% fake news. There were numbers mentioned — $50 million per year — which is crazy. I get that Hapoel Tel Aviv draws attention because we’re spending money,” Hinas said. “I counted 37 players who were linked with us. It’s good we’ll have three rosters, because when you have 37 players, it makes things easier. To be serious — it’s not true. There was no interest, and no one approached him.”

While the rumors about Russell Westbrook have been refuted, for now, uncertainty remains, particularly as he becomes a free agent. Since leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019, the former UCLA standout jumped to five teams, all of which had no deep playoff results. He led the team’s bench with 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in his Nuggets stint.
On Friday, analyst Adam Wells mentioned three top potential landing spots for Russell Westbrook as he enters the market on June 30. One of the teams was the Nuggets, where Westbrook played last season.
“One of the reasons that Westbrook landed in Denver last summer was because Nikola Jokić was pushing to play with the former MVP,” Wells wrote. “If the Nuggets can bring him back for the veteran minimum ($3.6 million), we know his fit with Jokić works well enough to help the team win games.”
The Dallas Mavericks and the Sacramento Kings are also options. However, Wells preferred the Kings more since he claimed that Westbrook wouldn’t fit in with the former due to the upcoming Cooper Flagg.
