Notable update surfaces on Domantas Sabonis’ future

De’Aaron Fox may be long gone, but his ex-Sacramento Kings co-star still seems to be committed to the team.

Kings big man Domantas Sabonis will remain with the franchise this season and has expressed a willingness to recommit and buy-in to the team, Anthony Slater of ESPN reported Wednesday. Slater notes that Sacramento did explore the possibility of moving Sabonis both at the February trade deadline and around the time of the NBA Draft, but no deal ultimately materialized.

Additionally, Sabonis became eligible for a new contract extension last month, but that reportedly is not being explored by the Kings at the moment. You can read Slater’s full report on the situation here.

Sabonis, 30, has been with Sacramento since 2022 and has made two All-NBA teams and one-All Star appearance as a King in addition to leading the league in rebounding three times. The 6-foot-10 Sabonis was also a bedrock of the 2022-23 Sacramento team that won 48 games and the Pacific Division to earn the franchise’s first playoff berth since way back in 2006.

But it has all been downhill for the Kings ever since then with now back-to-back losing seasons, including a 22-60 disaster in 2025-26. While Sabonis did average 15.8 points and 11.4 rebounds for Sacramento last season, he only made 19 total appearances due to a partial meniscus tear that required surgery.

Sabonis still has two years and $94 million left on his contract with the Kings. But because he is one of the very few quality bigs left on a guard-heavy Sacramento team, Sabonis still has a clear and defined place on the roster (unlike this fellow All-Star teammate of his).
