Noteworthy update surfaces about Steph Curry's future

The Golden State Warriors are not ready for Steph Curry’s last dance just yet.

Golden State would be “very open” to a new max contract extension for their superstar guard Curry, Anthony Slater of ESPN reported on Thursday.

Slater notes that the Warriors are willing to give a new one-year or two-year max extension to Curry, who becomes extension-eligible in August.

Curry is obviously a homegrown icon and the longtime face of the Golden State franchise. A 12-time NBA All-Star, a two-time MVP and the centerpiece of four Warriors championship teams, Curry will go down as the greatest player in Golden State history as well as perhaps the greatest point guard of all-time once he retires.

That said, Curry will turn 39 years old in March and is about to enter Year 18 in the NBA. Combined with the fact that Curry is only under contract for one more season at $62.6 million, there are some very real conversations to be had right now about The Chef’s future.

Curry has not shown many signs of slippage up to this point and averaged 26.6 points per game on 47/39/92 shooting splits last season. That said, he did also appear in only 43 games due to a lingering knee injury.

After next season, the Warriors could have Jimmy Butler (unrestricted free agent), Kristaps Porzingis (player option), Al Horford (player option), and Brandin Podziemski (restricted free agent) coming off their books. That might give Golden State the confidence they need to entice Curry to stay for a little while longer. Plus, we do know that Curry thinks he still has several more years left in him.
