Fans who watched Game 2 between Oklahoma City and the Denver Nuggets were blessed. This contest featured broken records, as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recorded the highest plus/minus in a playoff game (+51). The Thunder also broke the record for most points in a half for a playoff game, scoring 87 in the first. All these records led to OKC winning by 43 points. Yet, one Denver player called out the refs for missing foul calls in their blowout.

Nuggets Player Calls Out Refs After Game 2 Blowout

A lot has to go wrong for a team to lose 149-106. It could be the fact that Denver had 20 turnovers. Or shot 37.9% from the field. That’s an even crazier assumption, but maybe the Thunder were the better team. According to Aaron Gordon, though, officiating cost the Nuggets that game.

Aaron Gordon’s Postgame Comments

After the loss, Gordon had some accusations. Gordon told the media, “You’re gonna have to push and shove him, put two hands on him, root him out, knee, elbows, all types of stuff that needs you. And it’s not necessarily legal, but not much that you can do. You gotta play through it. If they’re not gonna call it, they’re not gonna call it.”

In the video, he is frustrated, some of which may be due to his poor play. He also refers to his teammate Nikola Jokic. Fans and teammates made it clear they felt Jokic was fouled the entire night, causing them to lose. Gordon then goes on to deeper detail, highlighting that Jokic was fouled every play. Jokic did end up fouling out of the game, but he was also fouling all night. There was a time when he even jumped on top of Jaylin Williams.

“They’re fouling Joker first, and Joker’s a reactionary, and they do get the second guy often. But they’re fouling him, point-blank, period, throughout the game. And it’s the thing where you can’t call every foul, or you’d be calling the foul every single play. But they’re fouling him,” Gordon said.

Gordon thought the outcome would be different if the refs were less “favorable” to the Thunder. It is hard to believe that more foul calls on Oklahoma City would have changed the outcome. A great example of this is the free-throw numbers. If you remove all of Thunder’s free throws from Game 2, they still win. Surely Denver would have received more fouls if the refs were more favorable for OKC? Wrong, the Thunder have been called for a foul 51 times in the series, while the Nuggets have been called 50 times.

The Media Speaks Out

It’s not just Nuggets players saying the officiating is favored for Oklahoma City. Media member and Nuggets sports analyst SwipaCam also had thoughts on the officiating. “Look man… Scott Foster has been horrible. Hart has been two-hand shoving Jokic in the back since the start of the game, and now it’s about to start getting SUPER testy this whole half. The officials are responsible for every bit of this.”

The officials were not responsible for this blowout loss, plain and simple. The turnover margin, or even the shooting, can be accountable for that loss. Gordon did acknowledge that, saying, “In a game you get smoked by 40, it’s not the referees. It’s not the officiating.” However, he made his voice heard that the refs needed to stop missing calls.

The referees are not what won the Thunder the game. Oklahoma City was just the better team, and even Jokic admitted that. The series is now tied up at one game apiece, and Game 3 is on Friday in Denver. If the Thunder continue to play like this, the matchup can end in five games.
