After the ousting of head coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth, the Denver Nuggets have their sights on several Minnesota Timberwolves decision-makers.
In an April 10 exposé, The Athletic's Sam Amick and Tony Jones took the pulse of the power vacuum in Denver and found that league sources expect some discussion with Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly.
The interest in Connelly was a given, considering his role as Nuggets general manager for nine seasons before taking over the Wolves.
However, if Connelly, who has been given a better deal with the Timberwolves, is not interested, the Nuggets could make a pivot to another decision-maker in the Wolves front office.
Under new ownership, the Timberwolves are expected to do whatever it takes to keep Connelly in Minnesota, but they may see Connelly's "right-hand man", general manager Matt Lloyd, leave for Denver.
"League sources expect there to be discussions about a possible reunion with Tim Connelly, the former Nuggets general manager who drafted Jokić and whose departure to the Minnesota Timberwolves in May 2022 led to Booth’s promotion from his assistant general manager role," The Athletic's report read.
"While Connelly has an opt-out in his contract for this summer, it’s widely believed that Timberwolves owners Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore will do what it takes to retain him. League sources say Connelly’s right-hand man in Minnesota, general manager Matt Lloyd, is expected to receive consideration for the Nuggets job as well."
Lloyd is lauded for his scouting prowess, connections internationally and is the team's "chief communicator" with staff and the league.
“He’s one of the most well-respected guys in our profession,” Connelly said of Lloyd in October. “He’s got the acumen and the work ethic and he’s got a wonderful emotional IQ. Someone really smart is going to hire him as their president.”
As the Timberwolves front office has gained praise for its moves that brought the team to the Western Conference finals, trading for Rudy Gobert, Mike Connelly and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the team is prone to some envy around the league that could lead to more departures.
Beyond the front office, the Nuggets must also find a new head coach.
Assistant Micah Nori could be part of a dual-package to Denver after he's received praise over the years behind Chris Finch.
Nori interviewed with the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers vacancies last summer and is already a buzz-worthy name for the Nuggets job.
