Most recent New York Knicks news has involved free agent forward OG Anunoby. He is one of several free agents that the team has to negotiate with this offseason if they want to bring the band back together to make another run.
After being acquired from the Toronto Raptors ahead of the New Year, the Knicks’ production skyrocketed. They were the best team in the NBA for the few weeks OG Anunoby was healthy and in the lineup alongside Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.
Things gelled as he understood his role offensively as a complementary piece. His corner 3-point shooting opened the court up for Brunson and Randle to operate, and then his adept cutting ability would result in dunks.
Defensively, he was everything the New York Knicks had hoped for. Whoever Tom Thibodeau wanted to shut down that night, OG Anunoby was assigned to. Guards, forwards, big men, you name it. If they drew Anunoby as their main matchup, they were in for a long night.
New York is going to do everything in its power to ensure that OG Anunoby comes back to the team. However, if a recent prediction comes true, they are going to have to back up the Brinks truck for him.
Over at Bleacher Report, Greg Swartz has predicted that OG Anunoby is going to sign a $200 million contract to return to the New York Knicks. There is too much leverage, in Swartz’s opinion, for it to come in cheaper.
“Given his impact on winning (20-3 record with the Knicks), leverage he can get from other teams with max cap space (hello, Philadelphia 76ers) and that his agent, Sam Rose, also represents Brunson and is the son of Knicks president Leon Rose, it’s safe to say Anunoby is going to get paid.
While getting Anunoby for $30 million per season would have been the dream for New York, expect the 26-year-old to sign a five-year, $200 million contract instead,” Swartz wrote.
Given the connections that run deep in the New York Knicks organization and CAA, you would expect the opposite. Holding out for as much money as possible would put New York in a tough spot, but OG Anunoby is a player they have to keep this offseason.
You don’t trade away foundational pieces such as Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett for a rental player. How much OG Anunoby signs for will have a major impact on the rest of the offseason for the New York Knicks.
