The New York Knicks are back in the NBA Finals after a pause of almost three decades, 27 years to be precise. And OG Anunoby understands better than most how difficult it is to reach the NBA Finals.
Going into one of their toughest battles of the season, the Knicks will face the dominating San Antonio Spurs. Where Victor Wembanyama and his men would try their best to knock off any or all challenges possessed by the opponents.
However, ahead of the Finals, Anunoby reflected on how much he has evolved both personally and professionally since that Raptors title run, when he was unable to play due to injury.
“I was a young player last time I was back,” he said. “So grown a lot on and off the court, and as a player. The first time it was really cool, but it wasn’t the way I would have wanted it. So this time, just happy to be here, happy to be healthy.”

That difference matters for Anunoby. Seven years ago, he experienced the Finals mostly from the sidelines while learning from veterans on a championship roster. Now, he enters the series as one of the Knicks’ most important two-way players and the only member of the roster with championship experience.
The New York forward has played a major role in the Knicks’ dominant postseason run, helping lead the franchise to its first NBA Finals appearance since 1999.
The Knicks arrive riding an 11-game playoff winning streak, with Anunoby averaging nearly 20 points per game while providing elite defense and efficient perimeter shooting.
The challenge now becomes slowing down Wembanyama and the Spurs. Though he admitted Wembanyama presents a completely unique challenge because of his versatility and size.
While the 2026 NBA Finals would surely be one to remember for a long time for OG Anunoby, it will naturally revolve around him and Victor Wembanyama.
Slowing down Wembanyama is never going to be a one-man job. Still, Anunoby appears to be New York’s best option to make the Spurs superstar uncomfortable early in the series.

Although Anunoby is nine inches shorter, he possesses the key physical traits to make it difficult:

Despite giving up significant height, the Englishman brings the exact combination the Knicks need: strength, discipline, and elite defensive instincts. The 6-foot-7 forward owns a massive wingspan and plays with enough physicality to disrupt the French superstar before he gets deep position near the rim.
However, that part is critical. Once Wembanyama settles inside the paint, there are very few defenders in basketball capable of stopping him. The Knicks will likely try to force him into becoming more perimeter-oriented, where Anunoby’s lateral quickness and ability to contest jumpers can become valuable.
