OKC GM addresses potential Russell Westbrook signing
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Are the banged-up Oklahoma City Thunder eyeing a reunion with former NBA Most Valuable Player Russell Westbrook?

Not really, according to Thunder general manager Sam Presti.

“I haven’t thought about anything relative to the roster spot,” Presti told reporters when asked about the potential of his team luring Westbrook to unretire and run it back with Oklahoma City, via the Thunder’s YouTube channel.

“I understand the question, but all I’m really focused on right now is players, giving them the right support, and then helping everybody with our group.”

Westbrook announced his retirement in August, following a one-year stint with the Sacramento Kings.

The 37-year-old Westbrook could have played for at least another season, considering that he was still able to average 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.5 rebounds with the Kings. However, he decided it was time to move on from playing basketball.

The Thunder, particularly their backcourt, are beset by health issues early in the 2026-27 season, with Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace both suffering significant injuries.

Westbrook could theoretically provide depth for the Thunder at the guard spots while offering a feel-good story about a veteran reuniting with the team he used to lead. However, Presti’s response implies that it’s not an option Oklahoma will be pursuing.
