Pacers turn to Delon Wright after Monte Morris injury nixes deal

The Pacers have shuffled their camp plans at point guard.

Veteran Monte Morris was originally set to sign a non-guaranteed, one-year deal with Indiana. But as GM Chad Buchanan confirmed this week, a calf injury prevented that agreement from moving forward.

Enter Delon Wright. According to Pacers insider Tony East, Wright will instead join the camp roster, pending a physical. Like Morris, he’s expected to be on a similar non-guaranteed deal as he competes for a roster spot.

Indiana already has 13 players on guaranteed contracts. That leaves some wiggle room for Wright, who will battle fellow non-guaranteed bigs James Wiseman and Tony Bradley for a spot. The Pacers also carry three Exhibit 10 deals.

Wright, 32, split last season between the Bucks and Knicks. He averaged 3.1 points in 40 games, with a bump to 4.3 points and 2.1 assists after landing in New York, where he also logged six playoff appearances. If he plays this season, it will mark his 11th year — and potentially his 11th different NBA team.

As for Morris, 30, he suited up for the Suns last year, averaging 5.2 points and 1.6 assists in 45 appearances. For his career, he’s averaged 9.5 points and 3.6 assists across 420 games with Denver, Washington, Detroit, Minnesota and Phoenix.

For now, though, it’s Wright who gets the look in Indiana, as the Pacers try to patch together depth behind Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell with Tyrese Haliburton sidelined for the season.
