Former NBA star Patrick Ewing has agreed to become an assistant coach under Brian Keefe in Washington, sources tell ESPN’s Shams Charania ( Twitter link). Ewing will get back into coaching after serving as an ambassador for the Knicks since 2024.

He also returns to the city where he starred for Georgetown in the 1980s, leading the Hoyas to one national championship and three trips to the Final Four. He later became the school’s head coach, compiling a 75-109 record and reaching one NCAA Tournament from 2017 to 2023.

Ewing also has 15 years of experience as an NBA assistant, starting with the Wizards in 2002/03. He spent time with Houston and Orlando as well before serving as associate head coach with Steve Clifford in Charlotte.

As a Hall of Fame center, it would be natural to expect Ewing to be assigned to work with Washington’s big men, such as Anthony Davis, Alex Sarr and Deandre Ayton, who is being acquired from the Lakers. However, Josh Robbins of The Athletic points out that while Ewing worked closely with Dwight Howard in Houston, his responsibilities haven’t been limited to tutoring big men.

Ewing will join a team that appears to be on the rise in the East after trading for Davis and Trae Young prior to the deadline and landing AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 pick. Young agreed to a four-year extension last month, and the Wizards seem set on keeping Davis in the wake of recent trade rumors linking him with Golden State.
