The Miami Heat recently were locked into the play-in tournament for a fourth straight year following a blowout loss to the Toronto Raptors. It’s been a strange year for the Heat, with injuries, trade rumors, and overall stagnation keeping the team treading water for the most part in 2025-26.
One of the few bright spots for Miami this year has been second-year guard Pelle Larsson, who has expanded his offensive game in his sophomore NBA season.
Recently, the Heat guard got 100% real on how he views his role in Miami under head coach Erik Spoelstra’s system.
“Just being consistent, reliable,” Larsson said, per Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. “On defense, not getting beat too many times and messing up things. Like really, I’m a relief player a lot of times. Like relief points on the offensive end and don’t allow any relief points on the defensive end.”
Larsson has indeed brought a level of consistency to both sides of the ball this year, in many ways serving as a “glue guy” for Miami who can fill in the gaps on both offense and defense and not get in the way of what the team is trying to accomplish.
While players like Larsson who know their role and play it well are very important for NBA teams, Miami currently has a lack of premium star talent on its roster, and not many clear avenues to get one moving forward, as the Heat’s free agency allure that reached its peak in the LeBron James days seems to have fully lost its shine.
Perhaps another inevitable quick playoff exit this year will finally motivate Pat Riley and company to turn the page from the team’s current iteration.
