Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra flew to Sweden to watch Pelle Larsson in action.
Pelle Larsson had a mixed rookie season with the Miami Heat in 2024-25, reflective of the team’s rollercoaster year.
Larsson played 55 regular season games, starting eight, after being selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft.
Over the next few weeks, Larsson will be gaining further experience playing for Sweden at EuroBasket.
Pelle Larsson’s Sweden hosted a friendly against Estonia on August 20, losing a close competitive game 88-87.
Larsson missed a late shot to win the game and ended with 13 points. He shot 3-for-10 from the field.
A lot is expected from the young NBA player, with Larsson criticized on Swedish television late during the game.
Swedish newspaper Expressen reported that SVT’s Nick Rajacic said: “We have to be honest and say that Pelle Larsson didn’t play well today.
“He has played better in the other friendly matches. I know there are eight minutes left in the match, but more will be required of Larsson in the European Championship if Sweden is to win.”
There was a special guest in attendance to watch Pelle Larsson, Miami Heat coach Er ik Spoelstra flew all the way to Sweden to see the game.
Speaking to the media, Spoelstra talked up Larsson, commenting: “He got a bigger role towards the end of the season, he’s tough and a great role player, fits in with all the best players.
“He keeps getting better. On top of that, he’s an incredible person. We like that balance, that you can compete while being a good person. He is a very smart player, at the same time very technically skilled.”
Larsson, described as ‘one of the quietest’ players off the court by teammate Bam Adebayo, was thankful for Erik Spoelstra’s visit.
“It means a lot that he’s here. We haven’t had much time in Miami just the two of us, so it was great to get to know each other a little more off the field. He got to meet my family. It means they care.”
Spoelstra is due to fly to Serbia to visit Heat player Nikola Jovic next, when they take on Slovenia.
