The Philadelphia 76ers' decision to hand Paul George a four-year, $212 million deal in the summer was originally viewed as a masterstroke that would turn them into Championship contenders. But as we head towards the end of the regular season, it feels like one of the biggest mistakes in franchise history.
The Sixers have not transformed into Championship contenders following the arrival of George. On the contrary, they are one of the worst teams in the league and look set to miss even the play-in spots.
As for George on an individual level, he has endured arguably the worst season of his career. He has averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists.
Those are not the numbers you expect from a perennial All-Star and future Hall of Famer like George. And things could get worse for him.
According to Shams Charania on ESPN, George is consulting with doctors this week on treatment options for his groin and knee injuries. A decision is expected early next week.
The 34-year-old has played through groin, finger and knee ailments this season, and he has been battling multiple injuries over the past month.
Joel Embiid was ruled out for the rest of the season by the 76ers recently. And it is very possible that George could be headed on the same path.
Of course, there is not much left to play for the Sixers this season. So, that would not be a major blow for them. One can only hope that George is able to take care of his issues and is back fully fit come next season.
