Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George is expected to miss the start of the 2025-26 season, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN.

George is recovering from left knee surgery. He got injured during a workout over the summer.

“I’ve been talking to people in Paul George’s camp and I’m told that it is not expected that he will be suiting up for opening night next Wednesday in Boston,” Charania said. “I am told, though, that he is making significant progress after having offseason arthroscopic knee surgery. And a return to debut should be shortly into the regular season. He still has some checkmarks he has to hit from his rehab process because remember, Paul George never got right last season after having a hyperextended knee. He had multiple other knee injuries in the preseason, early in the year.

“And every time he really rushed back because of not only the Sixers’ start to the year, the other injuries this team had.”

The Sixers signed George to a massive four-year, $211 million contract last summer. George will make $51.7 million this season and $54.1 million next season. The swingman has a player option worth $56.6 million for the 2027-28 season.

George played in 41 games last season. He averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 43.0% from the field, 35.8% from beyond the arc and 81.4% from the free-throw line.

George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey appeared in only 15 games together in the 2024-25 season. Philadelphia finished last season with a record of 24-58 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

A California native, George has played for the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers and Sixers. He has career averages of 20.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

George, 35, has never reached the NBA Finals.
