The Phoenix Suns’ experiment of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal is likely to meet an anticlimactic end this offseason.

The 2024-25 NBA season was far from fruitful for the Phoenix Suns as the organization missed the postseason following an 11th-seed finish in the Western Conference.

Following the underwhelming performance, the rumors surrounding Kevin Durant’s departure have only gotten stronger. The San Antonio Spurs have been proposed as an ideal destination for the 2x NBA champion.

San Antonio Spurs deem Phoenix Suns’ asking price for Kevin Durant ‘too high’

The Spurs may be Durant’s preferred destination and the Spurs may benefit from his addition, but let’s not forget that the Slim Reaper is already 36 years old.

Evidently, the Spurs likely do not wish to give up too much for an aging superstar who has an estimated salary of $54.7 million for the 2025-26 season.

Keeping that in mind, it’s no surprise that the Spurs rejected the Suns’ asking price for KD in a potential trade.

“I know our friends in San Antonio think the price is too high and in the original discussions, including the No. 2 pick and/or Stephon Castle are not going very well on the Spurs end of the telephone, I can tell you that,” Kirk Goldsberry told Zach Lowe.

The Spurs may have the assets to trade for a superstar, but to waste them on an aging version of KD is not wise.

Duane Rankin says the Phoenix Suns need to ‘reduce’ their asking price for Kevin Durant

Durant may have averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game for the Suns last season, but that doesn’t change the fact that the 2x NBA champion is getting older.

Sure, the Suns paid a massive price for Durant in 2023, but it’s unrealistic to expect a similar return for him in 2025. Suns insider Duane Rankin confirmed this during a recent report for The Arizona Republic.

“The Phoenix Suns may be placing too high a value on Kevin Durant and might have to reduce their asking price in negotiating a trade,” Rankin wrote.

“The Suns have ‘no leverage’ in part because of Durant’s age and because he wants to start fresh elsewhere, league sources say.

“The idea of Durant returning to a team that entertained deals for him before the 2025 trade deadline isn’t a pleasant one,” he added.
