Ausar Thompson has continued to take strides in his third season with the Detroit Pistons. The 22-year-old small forward has steadily improved each year in Detroit after being selected fifth overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Thompson has started all four games for the Pistons this season, posting 14.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest while shooting 52.2 percent from the field.
While Thompson continues to take strides offensively, he has solidified himself as one of the best defenders in the league. Thompson thrives as a perimeter defender and is capable of defending multiple positions with his athleticism and anticipation. Thompson is expected to continue developing into an impactful two-way player as part of Detroit’s long-term plans.
As the Pistons gear up for their fifth game of the season against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, Ausar Thompson has been added to the team’s injury report. On Tuesday, Detroit officially listed Thompson as questionable due to an undisclosed illness.
Hunter Patterson of The Athletic confirmed the development along with the latest updates on two of Thompson’s teammates, Marcus Sasser and Caris LeVert. “Ausar Thompson (illness) is listed as questionable for the Pistons’ matchup against the Magic tomorrow. Marcus Sasser (right hip impingement) and Caris LeVert (injury recovery) are both questionable as well,” he wrote on X.

If Thompson is unavailable to go, the Pistons would likely turn to Ronald Holland to start in his place. Holland, a 20-year-old forward, is now in his second season with Detroit, locked into a bench role behind Thompson. If Detroit holds out Thompson, his next chance to suit up will come on Saturday at home against the Dallas Mavericks, which would give Thompson three days to move past his illness.
Thompson remains central to the Pistons’ plans on returning to the NBA playoffs and making a deep postseason run in the Eastern Conference. After breaking through last year, Detroit added notable reinforcements alongside Thompson and superstar guard Cade Cunningham. The Pistons currently own a 2–2 record heading into Wednesday’s game against Orlando.
