The Pistons have picked up their rookie scale team option on Ron Holland for the 2027/28 season, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac (Twitter link) and RealGM’s transaction log.
Holland, the fifth overall pick in the 2024 draft, is entering his third NBA season and will earn roughly $9.1MM in 2026/27. His fourth-year option, which is now fully guaranteed, is worth $11.5MM.
Exercising that option ensures Holland will become extension-eligible during the 2027 offseason and could become a restricted free agent in 2028 if he doesn’t sign a new contract before then.
While many rookie scale team option decisions are a mere formality, that wasn’t necessarily the case for the Pistons with Holland. Although he has appeared in 159 of 164 regular season games for Detroit through his first two NBA seasons, the 21-year-old has struggled to produce consistent offense, having posted career averages of 7.3 points and 1.1 assists in 17.7 minutes per game, with a shooting line of .450/.246/.782.
However, Holland has played a regular rotation role for a team that won 44 games in his rookie year and 60 last season, and he’s considered one of Detroit’s most reliable perimeter defenders, behind only Defensive Player of the Year finalist Ausar Thompson.
As our tracker shows, Holland was the only Piston with a rookie scale team option for the 2027/28 season. Those option decisions are due by November 2.
