Prime Video announced an upcoming feature-length documentary, “Jerry West: The Logo,” which chronicles the life and career of the Los Angeles Lakers legend and NBA icon whose silhouette still serves as the logo of the league to this day. It is set to be released on April 16.
The documentary is a Propagate and Khalabo Ink Society production and is produced and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Kenya Barris, most known as the creator for the hit sitcom “Black-ish,” as well as the co-creator of “America’s Next Top Model.” The documentary will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Jerry West: The Logo explores the life and career of one of the greatest players and executives in the history of the league, as well as the personal issues he dealt with throughout his career that affected him both professionally and personally. It features the last interviews of West before his passing in 2024 and plenty of stories from the likes of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and many others, including West’s wife and kids.
The documentary dives deep into the perfectionism that drove West to amazing heights in his career, but also came at a cost with the Lakers icon opening up about private battles with depression and other personal issues that affected his marriage and relationships with his children. The film is able to capture West in his most vulnerable moments, a side of West that has rarely been seen, and examines the sacrifices he made in pursuit of greatness and whether or not it is all worth it in the end.
West had a professional career that is unmatched in basketball as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame both as a player and an executive. After being an NBA Champion and 14-time All-Star as a player with over 25,000 career points, West would go on to even greater heights as Lakers’ general manager, being the architect in helping build the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s as well as the Kobe-Shaq Lakers of the early-2000s. He also contributed to the success of the NBA’s most recent dynasty, the Golden State Warriors of the late-2010s and early-2020s.
The film is executive produced by Mychelle Deschamps and Hale Rothstein for Khalabo Ink Society; Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Drew Buckley, Isabel San Vargas, and Linh Le of Propagate; and Steven Leckart and E Brian Dobbins. Jamie Nelsen and Susana Santiago also serve as producers.
While Jerry West was one of the Lakers’ earliest superstars, LeBron James is one of their current ones and the all-time great recently broke the all-time NBA record for games played and he spoke about what that record means to him.
