PHILADELPHIA — The 76ers have been dealt an untimely setback. Jared McCain , their promising young guard, has suffered a UCL tear in his right thumb just weeks before training camp. The development threatens to derail his preparation for a crucial second year. Jared McCain’s injury comes at a critical moment for both player and team. The Sixers envision McCain as a cornerstone alongside Tyrese Maxey and V.J Edgecombe in their revamped backcourt. His offensive skill set and confidence made him one of the brightest rookies last season.
McCain, the 16th overall pick in the 2024 draft, quickly established himself as a difference-maker. He averaged 15.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists across 23 games before a torn meniscus ended his blistering rookie campaign in December. His sharpshooting won him Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors in November. If the season ended 23 games in, he would have won the rookie of the year award in a landslide.
This latest issue rules him out for opening night. Training camp begins September 28, and the season tips off October 22. McCain’s injury forces the Sixers to weigh rest against surgery, with the recovery period hinging on that decision. The team acknowledged that “further updates will be provided as appropriate,” leaving supporters anxious about clarity.
The setback also disrupts what McCain believed to be a smooth return. On Sept. 2, he said he was “on pace” to be ready for the opening tipoff. That optimism has now collided with harsh reality. Just as McCain was regaining momentum, another obstacle has emerged.
Jared McCain’s injury could open doors for others. Edgecombe, drafted third overall this summer, may step into the starting lineup sooner than expected. Playing next to Maxey, the rookie could accelerate his own development while easing the blow of McCain’s absence.
Still, the 76ers drafted McCain for his scoring punch and composure in big moments. Losing him for an extended stretch is far from ideal.
The Sixers’ long-term vision remains intact, but the team is all too aware how injuries can build up and derail a whole season. McCain’s combination of shooting, poise, and toughness gives the roster a dynamic edge when fully available.
For now, the focus shifts toward his recovery and the adjustments required from head coach Nick Nurse.
