As the 2024-25 season approached, many Chicago Bulls fans agreed that the front office needed to focus on retaining its 2025 draft pick, given the lack of potential stars on the current roster. The Bulls owe their 2025 first-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs as part of the DeMar DeRozan sign-and-trade deal. However, since the pick is top-10 protected, the Bulls will likely retain should they finish in the bottom third of the standings this season.

As the 2025 draft approached, Ace Bailey was viewed as the player most comparable to Cooper Flagg in terms of star potential. However, Bailey's teammate Dylan Harper has recently taken on that mantle. Despite this shift, Bailey still possesses significant potential as a two-way star.

Analysis

Ace Bailey is a hyper-athletic wing who offensively lives above the rim while utilizing that same athleticism on the defensive end. Bailey understands how to move without the ball and knows where he is always supposed to be on the court. While the off-ball movement and athletic defensive plays make for a great role player, Bailey’s potential for stardom lies in his flashes of on-ball creation.

Bailey has shown he can create for himself; however, he still needs to improve his ability to create for others, given he averages just under one assist and over two turnovers per game.

NBA Comparison

Even in just his third season, Paolo Banchero has significantly enhanced his skills with better ball handling and reliable shooting. Similarly, Bailey shows promise for development, as he is eager to take jump shots and create scoring chances.

Like Banchero, Bailey scores effectively in the mid-range, where he can either shoot or drive to the basket. Both players use their physicality to navigate the offense, employing traditional moves such as jab steps and back-to-the-basket techniques.

Chicago Bulls Fit

Ace Bailey is an ideal defensive wing for the Chicago Bulls. He can seamlessly integrate into the team by effectively running the fast break, whether on or off the ball. His playmaking weaknesses won’t be a concern, as he’ll be playing alongside guards like Josh Giddey and Coby White. A core that includes two defensive wings, Matas Buzelis, and Ace Bailey, could be exactly what the Bulls need to reestablish themselves as true contenders.
