Despite the tough Game 7 exit, which is always a hard pill to swallow, Toronto Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic was proud of his team, especially 24-year-old Scottie Barnes.
Rajakovic addressed his pleasure of coaching Barnes postgame following the 114-102 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He also suggested that the fans should expect more out of him come next season.
“For this stage of his career, I think he gave it all. He made a huge stride. He got so much better in this playoff series … but this is not the best version of Scottie that we’re going to see,” the Serbian said.

“I know how hungry he is, how much he’s going to work over the course of the summer, and what kind of player he’s going to be next year. I think we’re going to see an even better Scottie next year,” Rajakovic added.
Barnes has given his coach all reason to laud him, fighting right through the end of the series against the Cavaliers.
Barnes once again showed up in the decider, scoring 24 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and a block. He shot 8-of-14 from the field, including 1-of-1 from beyond the arc, and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Barnes said the Raptors’ approach remained consistent despite the result and playoff pressure.
“I feel like I was just trying to go out there, win every single game, do whatever it takes,” he said. “I’m just trying to give 100% effort.”
Even though the Raptors ended their season with a first-round exit in the playoffs, they can be proud of what they have accomplished as a collective.
In three seasons, coach Rajakovic has done nothing but propel the team to greater heights. The Raptors went from 25 wins in Rajakovic’s first year as coach to 30 wins in year 2, now finishing with 46 wins in his third season.
However, developing Scottie Barnes into the player he is now might be Rajakovic’s biggest achievement, as even RJ Barrett went out of his way to praise the 24-year-old for silencing critics.
While Barrett himself had an impressive playoff performance against the Cavaliers with averages of 24.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, he decided to praise Barnes’ ability to play within the system.
“I think he shut up a lot of talk & I’m happy he was able to do that because, man, that’s a winning player. Just because he’s not a guy that comes out & tries to get 30 every night does not mean that he’s not one of the best basketball players in this league,” Barrett said.
At 24, Barrett is already regarded as one of the most elite two-way players in the league. Rajakovic’s Raptors are sure to thrive on his development and build the team around him in future seasons.
But for now, another impressive season under Rajakovic comes to an end for the Raptors. What do you make of it?
