The Raptors have signed free agent guard Malachi Smith, the team formally announced in a press release (Twitter link via Zulfi Sheikh of Raptors Republic).
Smith, 26, went undrafted out of Gonzaga in 2023 and played in the G League for the majority of his first three professional seasons before catching on with the Nets this past March. The 6’4″ shooting guard signed a pair of 10-day contracts with Brooklyn before agreeing to a two-year, minimum-salary contract.
Smith’s deal included a second-year team option for 2026/27, which the Nets exercised in June. However, his $2.15MM salary remained fully non-guaranteed, and he was waived last month as Brooklyn looked to maximize its cap space.
Smith played a regular role for a lottery-bound Nets team down the stretch and was relatively productive in his first 15 NBA games (four starts), averaging 8.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 23.9 minutes per night on .485/.435/1.000 shooting. Before his call-up to the NBA, he averaged 14.4 PPG, 5.7 APG, and 5.6 RPG in 39 outings (28.7 MPG) in the G League for the Long Island Nets, with a shooting line of .520/.422/.769.
While the Raptors didn’t provide any details on Smith’s agreement, it’s not listed in the NBA’s transaction log, which suggests it’s a non-guaranteed training camp contract — the NBA’s log doesn’t feature Exhibit 9 or Exhibit 10 deals.
Toronto now has 20 players under contract, one off the offseason limit. That total includes Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, since the team’s tentative deal for Kawhi Leonard has yet to be finalized.
